After her best friend abandons small-town Casey in New York City alone, out of necessity she moves in with Luc, a volatile, but alluring, chef. Casey, teaching high school English while she finishes her PhD, is clever and compassionate; but she is also plagued with deeply rooted insecurities firmly planted by a controlling and critical mother. So, when Luc begins to fall for her, she doesn’t believe she could ever be good enough for him.
Luc’s mother, who is all about appearances, reinforces Casey’s diffidence, insisting that her son deserves better than the woman she describes as “short, fat, and with hair that is a nest of curls.” And when Casey goes home with Luc for Thanksgiving, she meets his model ex-girlfriend and sees, first hand, that she is definitely not Luc’s type. Still, Luc makes her feel more loved than she ever has; she is so flattered by his unfamiliar affections that she quickly dismisses any nagging doubts and lets herself fall in love with him.
But, when Luc’s erratic moods manifest as anger and aggression toward Casey, to protect their relationship, she begins to shut down, desperately hoping to avoid conflict, yet losing herself in the process.
It isn’t until she meets Danny, a firefighter still emotionally recovering from 9/11, that Casey is able to reclaim a part of herself.
By that point, it may be too late.
Through it all, Casey learns that in life, meaning isn’t found in the decisions we make; significance is born from the culpability we are willing to accept for our choices. Our actions are never good, or bad; they are defined only through the reality we attach to them and the way we use them to create our truths – the secrets we keep, the lies we tell ourselves, the words left unspoken. This book is about what happens when people don’t speak the words that need to be spoken. It is about love and loss and finding a way to be satisfied with what you have, when what you want is so much more.

I am not normally someone who reads this genre of fiction, so it surprised me when, instead of wanting to put the book down after I was a quarter of the way finished, I wanted to keep reading until the end. I liked the book so much that I read it quickly over the course of two days, during my breaks and lunch periods at work. I gave it four stars, because I just really have a hard time getting into "chick lit," as my friends call it.Perhaps the reason I enjoyed this book so much more than others of this genre is the strong and beautiful development of the characters. I wanted to hug and comfort each character while simultaneously desiring to give each one a stern talking to. I found myself wavering between loving and trusting each of them, and then a few pages later thinking that they all had ulterior motives. Of course, as a reader, I wanted to be able to root for Casey, since this is her story, but there were several times throughout the story when I found myself feeling sympathy for Luc or Danny, instead of Casey.
The inclusion of real-life situations and themes was a huge asset for this book. Not that they are on the same level in the human scheme of things, but having one character struggle with his mental health, another struggle with some pretty serious issues of her own, having other characters be virtual walking encyclopedias of baseball statistics, and having the back drop of the book move between the restaurant industry and a firefighter who mourns 911 lent to the authenticity of this book.
Oaklyn does a fabulous job of ending the book, which is always the hardest part. I hate it when a book wraps up neatly with a little bow on everything at the end, because, quite frankly, it's unbelievable and readers know better. "Just Enough" ends with some storylines finished, but others are left wide open for the reader to imagine how they might wrap up in the future. There is an excellent balance of the two.
I have much more I could say about this book, but I don't believe in spoilers, so I'll stop here.

Just Enough eBook Elizabeth Oaklyn Reviews
I'm not one to write reviews for books, but for this book, I'll make an exception. This book is categorized as women's upmarket contemporary fiction, almost entirely adjectives that would never appeal to me. As a man, this book is definitely not written for me, but it appeared on my , and I decided to give it a shot. The characters were compelling, their personal motives real and natural, and Caseys reactions and thoughts to her surroundings were as close to a true telling of human nature as I've ever seen. To me, the mark of a good book is how true it is to how a human, a real person, would react in any given situation. This book stays true to the human reality, and as a result, is a compelling and complete read for any person of any background, a lover of any genre, and an overall good read.
I was so impressed by this book! It wasn't what I was expecting, and that kept me hooked through all 441 pages of it. The story is spun out over several years, so it took more effort for me to understand the 'why' behind some of the actions of the characters, especially since as the reader it was only a matter of minutes between them. As time went by (in the story), the characters grew and changed so much, and I really felt each of their emotions as they felt them. I feel like I've known them forever, and I'm so excited for the next book.
The characters were very well developed and with the story line taking place over several years, I did not feel that anyone was pointless; they all had a role to play in the story, and even if that role changed, I did not feel that it negatively effected the progress of the plot.
Casey and Danny and Luc are so interlocked in this story that a 'love triangle' doesn't even cover it! The emotions are so strong between them and I loved hearing the thoughts of each of them throughout the book, even though the book is written in third person. Even though the different points of view added to the story, there were times where i jumped points of view in the same paragraph, and even during conversations. This was confusing, to say the least. It stopped the flow of the story, and I had to pause as the story shifted. With that said, the plot was worth it.
The ending ripped me to pieces, yet I am still hungry for more. ) I cannot thank Elizabeth enough for this emotional roller coaster.
JE is my new favorite book. Casey and Ben are my favorite characters to follow because from the very first time we meet Ben, he seems to have this understanding and caring disposition toward Casey that makes him one of the most important (if not the most important) characters in the book. Beyond the characters though -- I identified with all of them in one way or another -- the concept behind this book and the story itself are so intriguing. I am either a page-turner or a no go on reading, and JE is definitely one to hijack hours of your time in one sitting to ensure you get the fast-paced action from start to finish. From the historical undertones that are so significant to the shaping of our country today, to the cultural implications of the characters loving sports, and finally to the intra and interpersonal conflict present throughout the story line, this is truly an all-American masterpiece that discusses real people and real issues. All of these pieces are woven together so nicely and with expertise I can only imagine could come from my high school english teacher - LOL. I HIGHLY recommend to anyone looking for a great, easy read that will keep your attention the whole way through.
